Khelaiya Productions endeavours to pursue creative and contemporary storytelling in Indian folk and semi-classical musical format. Our Hindi musical, Devdas will give you all a taste of the culture and customs of Bengal.
Devdas is based on the book written by eminent Bangali author S.C. Chattopadhyay in 1917. It's an iconic tale of love and tragedy. Set against the backdrop of rural Bengal during feudal times, Devdas and Paro are childhood friends who are separated at a young age when Devdas is sent to Calcutta for studies. Love blossoms between Devdas and Paro but prevailing social customs in Bengal in the early 1900s prevent the couple's union. Devdas takes a path to destruction, becoming an alcoholic and seeking solace in the company of a courtesan, Chandramukhi, who takes good care of Devdas and falls in love with him. Devdas never recovers from his misery and frequently compares Paro and Chandramukhi, remaining ambivalent as to whom he really loves. The combination of excessive drinking and the despair of life lead Devdas to succumb to death.
